The Problem With Mass Media

The “mass media” (by its very nature as a mediated source) presents politics as a constructed artifice, a system of ideological arguments rather than facts alone. Mass media’s very existence is predicated on the ideological and political influences that helped to bring it about (that great American historical/political teleological thrust forward in the name of Progress that washed the Puritans ashore and ultimately ushered in an era of “free speech”). Despite its ability to connect the citizenry of the United States to the political processes that govern that same land, the mass media simultaneously demonstrate the potential, if not the trajectory -even the danger of mediated politics to entirely erase the public’s connection with any semblance of a true political process.

What do you think?

Welcome To The New Town Square

There is no easy way to say it -I am sick to death of all the trash I see on television that is passed off as legitimate coverage of this historic election.  I am tired of the quips and the in-fighting, and I think America has to take a good hard look at itself in the mirror when the best political coverage is found on Comedy Central.  I love Jon Stewart as much as the next guy, but seriously people can't we do a little better than that?  The answer from media has been a resounding NO.

That's what I'm here for -that is why I have taken the plunge into the treacherous and nebulous waters also known as the blogosphere.

This is the new town square.  Here you will find articles, videos, and postings from me, you, and anyone who wants to participate.

We still love America -so let's take it back- one post at a time.
