The “mass media” (by its very nature as a mediated source) presents politics as a constructed artifice, a system of ideological arguments rather than facts alone. Mass media’s very existence is predicated on the ideological and political influences that helped to bring it about (that great American historical/political teleological thrust forward in the name of Progress that washed the Puritans ashore and ultimately ushered in an era of “free speech”). Despite its ability to connect the citizenry of the United States to the political processes that govern that same land, the mass media simultaneously demonstrate the potential, if not the trajectory -even the danger of mediated politics to entirely erase the public’s connection with any semblance of a true political process.
